KA'IPOLANI BUTTERWORTH
Barbara Butterworth left Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania for Hawaii in 1949 and never looked back. Her daughter
began hula classes and her mother immersed herself in the music of Polynesia. Bella and Bill Richards
took her on as their protege and gave her her Hawaiian name.
Besides performing herself, Ka'ipolani played a great part in attracting the first visitors to Ala Moana Center with her Sunday morning 'Young
People's Hula Show,' a favorite with visitors for many years.
Biographical material from Tony Todaro, The Golden Years of Hawaiian Entertainment (Tony Todaro Pub., 1974).
