Golden Ballet dancer

GOLDEN BALLET

This was originally the opening number of the second act. It was a ballet done full stage with the dancers in gold costumes of Thai design. The stage was underlit in red and the music was essentially a second act prologue composed of the introduction to "One Night in Bangkok" with themes from the rest of the show interspersed, all with a sort of sitar sound. The dance was energetic and complicated, and so difficult, many of the dancers in the cast were injured performing it, partly because there wasn't time to warm up properly. By the third month after opening, it was only rarely included in the show and was permanently dropped after six months.
